Was Selma Snubbed for This Reason?

Some people have complained that the film, Selma, was snubbed by the Oscar committee. Martin Luther King, Jr. led many in the struggles to end discrimination against African Americans, and his achievements will never be forgotten. However, could it be possible that in spite of the excellent production, direction, and acting, the Selma story is already so well known that it does not alert attention as a film such as Twelve Years of Slavery which was an intriguing unknown story? So, while Selma is a historic portrayal of the unforgettable and unfortunate events during the 1960s, there are many unknown slavery and civil rights stories that need to be told through film. Who Marched and Cried for the 2000 Bombing Victims in Nigeria?

The week of January 5th to 9th, 2015 was a sad period in France since 14 people were killed by men affiliated with terrorists groups. A million or so people and world leaders came out in support of the victims and also to stand up for the freedom of the press. During that same week, over 2,000 people were killed in Nigeria in bomb blasts orchestrated by men affiliated with the terrorist group, Boko Haram. One bomb was strapped to two 10 years old girls and detonated when the children were in the presence of a large group of people. Both countries were inundated by horrific incidents, yet the massive deaths in Nigeria was never emphasized by the press as France's situation. Who marched and cried for the bombing victims of Nigeria? Doesn't that situation deserve equally attention as France's?
