Coco Chanel's Collaboration with the Nazi

A recent documentary on Coco Channel's life shows that she was a brillant businesswomen. However, it was unknown that she had a close connection with the Nazi during World War II. In fact, she was not only cordial to the Nazi, but she had a lover who held a high position in the Nazi army. Knowing that hundreds of thousands of Jews were slaughtered or cruelly treated in concentration camps by the Nazi, it is quite obvious that her lover was involved in the death and mistreatment of so many people. So, in turn, Coco Channel must have known of these sufferings and therefore would be indirectly involved. Yet, at the end of the war, while other Nazi sympathizers were paraded through the streets and humulated in different ways such as the shaving of the heads of the women, Coco Chanel was privately taken into custody. Even more astonishing is that she was quickly released to continue living a life of luxury. While her creations were no longer popular in Europe, it is astounding that even with knowledge of her involvement with the Nazi, she was warmly welcomed into the American society since her perfume and designs became popular and made her even richer than before. How could she be so readily accepted in any society with common knowledge of her connections with the Nazi? Were these American consumers so materialistic that the sufferings of the Jews were not relevant to them?
