Who Cares for Obama Care?

It is quite ironic that politicians and their political cronies have the best health insurance coverage at the expense of tax payers while they continue to fight to deprive those who have signed up for Obamacare. These politicians and supporters do not care that millions of persons are in dire need of health insurance coverage. They do not care that those persons with pre-existing conditions have an opportunity to gain medical coverage for their serious medical issues. They do not care that a low income parent can now afford to take care of his/her health so as to care for his/her children. More over, many of these politician and their cronies who are totally removed from the mainstream are not aware that even educated professionals are signing up for Obamacare. These conservatives are oblivious to the fact that this category of persons include adjunct professors and other professionals are unable to secure full time positions at colleges and universities so as to obtain group health insurance benefits. The main contention of the politicians is to spite President Obama by nit picking at every word of the Obamacare law so as to come up with an issue for the courts to deny this insurance to millions of people. But, these politicians and their supporters should realize that President Obama will never be affected by their hatred since the highest level of health care will always be available to him and his family for their lifetime. Instead, these conservatives are harming so many innocent voters who would not be able to afford health insurance if it was not for Obamacare.

Miami - Top City for Hit and Run Crimes

Over the years, hit and run cases have drastically increased in Miami-Dade county. It seems to have gone from a hit and run case a month to practically every week. It is difficult to determine what is in the mind of someone who does not demonstrate the moral scruples to stop so as to determine the injuries or fate of the person he/she hits and call 911. Such demonstration of concern is expected of humans who have a conscience. At first, my thoughts on who could be responsible for such a crime led to many speculations such as the person may not have a driver's license or they may be drunk or they may not have legal status, etc., etc.. The reasoning goes on and on but none of the excuses could justify how a hit and run represents cruelty with no conscience   I was involved in a hit and run and my first instinct was not to drive away but to remain on the scene so as to determine the welfare of the person. Further, the police officer on the scene advised that the accident was not my fault and that there are many similar cases where drivers thought they were at fault but really were not. However, in Miami drivers do not seem to wait around for their doubts to be addressed. Not only are children the victims of hit and run, but today a lady in a wheel chair was struck and left to die on the streets. Certainly, the driver must have realized that he hit a wheelchair as this is an object that cannot be mistaken. We live in a society were there is no love for humankind. Hitting another human and driving off is wrong and must stop.

The System Will Not Change If African Americans Continue to Support It

Recently, there have been concerns that African Americans have not been represented in popular annual events. The Academy Awards committee failed to nominate any of the cast members or the first female African American director for the highly acclaimed movie, Selma. One of the many concerns expressed is that the all white nominees do not represent the diverse population that now make up the population of the United States. Further on another matter, Yomi Abiola, model and founder of Stand Up for Fashion, brought awareness that Fashion Week, 2015, similar to previous years, lacked minority models on the runway. In fact, her report indicates that between 2008 - 2014, the number of White models hired to participate on the Fashion Week runway have increased steadily to 80%. Kanye West's fashion show was one of the few that reflected a diverse group of models wearing his designs. But does the designer have to be Black for Black models to have a chance to be considered for such an event? The system will not change if Blacks continue to support it. It is simply disrespectful to other races when designers fail year after year to hire any Black or minority models. Celebrities and other influential Blacks should realize that it is no longer chic to be attending Fashion Week as their mere presence at shows that lack minority models indicates that it is okay not to hire people like themselves.  Also, entertainment reporters and other Black celebrities hobnobing at this year's Oscar parties indicate support of such blatant biases against nominating minorities It is time for those who are respected by so many to recognize that they are in a position to enable changes to unfair practices that excludes people like themselves. When those minority celebrities take a stand the blatant disregard for others besides the White race will be addressed.

Street Demonstrations Quickly Lose Steam

There are so many heart rendering social causes against injustices worthwhile supporting. Initially, so many supporters jump on the band wagon and participate in demonstrations to the satisfaction of the media. Trevon Martin is an example of how people came out in droves to air their dissatisfaction that he was unjustly murdered by George Zimmerman. Even before Trevon, there have been demonstrations over police killings in New York and elsewhere. The recent killings in Ferguson, MO and Staten Island, NY are two cases where a multitude of persons made their dissatisfaction heard in the form of demonstrations through the streets. Even the 2% demonstrations in New York years ago was an example of people taking a stance against injustice. However, it is discomforting that this passion soon dies and the huge crowd of people quickly dwindles to the family, friends, and those who remain committed to the cause. During the Montgomery Bus Boycott, African Americans were determined not to drive on buses no matter how long it took. These people were in it for the long haul and would not let go of their cause until they were successful in having the freedom to board a bus and sit wherever they wanted. Today, people do not seem to have that stamina to continue demonstrating for causes and so they quickly go back to "business as usual". And, in the mean time, young Black men continue to be killed by police officers. Yesterday, a mentally ill man was shot dead by Miami Gardens police. And so, it continues............... Where have the "hands up don't shot" outcry gone?

Defending Evil!

It is always mind boggling when people, especially women, defend their male spouse or child after that person commits an evil, unforgivable act.These women are quite aware that the person they are defending in public has no morality and displays vicious behavior. Yet, the women try to give an impression that this person was an angel who could do no wrong! These women are fooling no one but themselves. Case in point, Karen Hick, called a news conference to say that her husband (murderer of three innocent students in Chapel Hill, North Carolina) "champions the rights of others". Certainly, he could not have been as she described since she filed for divorce the next day. It is time to stop coming out in public and defending persons who are known before hand to be capable of committing crimes. My respect to the three innocent young students in North Carolina.

Was Selma Snubbed for This Reason?

Some people have complained that the film, Selma, was snubbed by the Oscar committee. Martin Luther King, Jr. led many in the struggles to end discrimination against African Americans, and his achievements will never be forgotten. However,could it be possible that in spite of the excellent production, direction, and acting, the Selma story is already so well known that it does not alert attention as a film such as Twelve Years of Slavery which was an intriguing unknown story? So, while Selma is a historic portrayal of the unforgettable and unfortunate events during the 1960s, there are many unknown slavery and civil rights stories that need to be told through film. Surely, those movies will gain film industry accolades.

Who Marched and Cried for the 2000 Bombing Victims in Nigeria?

The week of January 5th to 9th, 2015 was a sad period in France since 14 people were killed by men affiliated with terrorists groups. A million or so people and world leaders came out in support of the victims and also to stand up for the freedom of the press. During that same week, over 2,000 people were killed in Nigeria in bomb blasts orchestrated by men affiliated with the terrorist group, Boko Haram. One bomb was strapped to two 10 years old girls and detonated when the children were in the presence of a large group of people. Both countries were inundated by horrific incidents, yet the massive deaths in Nigeria was never emphasized by the press as France's situation. Who marched and cried for the bombing victims of Nigeria? Doesn't that situation deserve equally attention as France's?
